Why tap water is the wrong choice

Tap water is safe to drink, but it carries dissolved calcium, magnesium, sodium and chlorides, and the amount changes from town to town and season to season. In technical jobs those minerals cause problems that build up slowly and cost money later.

Batteries

Flooded lead-acid batteries lose water as they charge. Topping up with tap water adds minerals every time, and they stay in the cell. Over time they can interfere with the plates and shorten battery life. Forklift, truck and standby batteries are all affected.

Coolant mixing

Coolant concentrates are designed to be diluted with demineralised water. Hard water forms scale in radiators and engine passages, reducing heat transfer, and the minerals use up the corrosion inhibitors in the coolant faster.

AdBlue^®

AdBlue® is 32.5% urea in demineralised water, and ISO 22241 sets very tight limits on calcium, magnesium, sodium and other metals. Never dilute or top up AdBlue® with tap water, and do not try to blend your own. Mineral contamination can damage SCR catalysts.

Other common uses include spot-free final rinses in truck washes, steam cleaners and pressure washers, humidifiers, and mixing cleaning concentrates to a consistent strength. Our guide to demineralised water uses covers more.

Storing it so it stays pure

Because demineralised water has so little dissolved in it, it readily picks up whatever it touches: dust, residue in a used container, or metal from a fitting. Purity at delivery is only half the job.

Store it in polyethylene, polypropylene or stainless steel. Avoid mild steel, galvanised and copper containers or fittings, which it can slowly attack and pick up metal from.
Keep lids and caps closed. Open containers absorb carbon dioxide from the air, which lowers the pH, and let dust in.
Never refill a container that has held oil, coolant, chemicals or drinks.
Use a clean, dedicated pump, hose or jug, labelled for demineralised water only.
Keep IBCs out of direct sun to limit algae growth and UV damage to the container.
Use older stock first, and reseal part-used drums straight away.

What to check when it arrives

Seals and caps intact, and the container clean and undamaged.
The label matches what you asked for.
If your process has a purity limit, check a sample with a conductivity or TDS meter and compare it with the spec sheet.

Per litre, an IBC costs about half the price of 20 L drums on the price list above. If you use more than a few 20 L drums a month and can handle an IBC, it is usually worth switching. Demineralised water can also come on the same delivery as your AdBlue®.

Demineralised, deionised or DI water?

Whether your spec says demineralised water, deionised water or DI water, this is the product. We supply it as an Australian manufacturer, in 20 L and 200 L drums, 1,000 L IBCs and bulk, Australia-wide.

Is demineralised water the same as deionised or DI water?

For most buyers, yes. Demineralised, deionised and DI water all describe water with the dissolved minerals and ions removed. The terms differ by purification method, but the result — low conductivity, no scale-forming minerals — is what batteries, coolant systems and industrial processes need.

Is it the same as distilled water?

It does the same job for battery top-ups and coolant mixing. Distilled water is boiled and condensed; demineralised water is purified without boiling, which makes it practical in bulk.

Can I get a specification sheet?

Yes. The spec sheet lists pH, TDS and conductivity.

Questions buyers ask

Can I use tap water to top up batteries?

It is not recommended. Tap water adds minerals every time you top up, and they stay in the battery cell. Demineralised water is the standard choice for flooded lead-acid batteries. Always follow the battery maker's instructions.

Can I dilute AdBlue with demineralised water?

No. AdBlue is made to a precise 32.5 percent urea concentration. Adding any water, even demineralised, takes it out of specification. Use AdBlue exactly as supplied.

What container should I store demineralised water in?

Use clean polyethylene, polypropylene or stainless steel containers, kept sealed. Avoid mild steel, galvanised or copper, and never reuse containers that held other liquids.

Does demineralised water go off?

It does not spoil, but it picks up contamination if containers are left open or dirty, and it absorbs carbon dioxide from the air, which lowers its pH. Keep it sealed, out of direct sun and use older stock first.

How do I check the purity of demineralised water?

A conductivity or TDS meter gives a quick reading. Compare the result with the values on our specification sheet, and call us if a reading looks wrong.
