How to read a Certificate of Analysis

A Certificate of Analysis (CoA) is the lab result for one production batch of AdBlue®. It is only useful if it matches the product in front of you, so check it rather than just filing it.

CHECKLISTFour checks on every CoA
  1. Match the batch numberThe batch number on the CoA should match the number on the IBC, drum or delivery paperwork. A CoA for a different batch tells you nothing about your stock.
  2. Check the urea contentISO 22241 allows 31.8% to 33.2% urea, with 32.5% as the target. The result should sit inside that range.
  3. Look at the impurity resultsThe CoA lists results for items such as biuret, alkalinity, aldehydes, insoluble matter, phosphate and trace metals like calcium, iron and sodium. Each should be at or below the ISO 22241 limit shown.
  4. Note the dateCompare the production date with how and where the product has been stored. Shelf life is about 18 months at or below 25 °C and falls quickly in hotter storage.

Use the batch certificate lookup to find a CoA, or read our guide to AdBlue® certificates of analysis. If a stored tank is in doubt, the free AdBlue® check gives a basic concentration and quality reading on a sample.

Using Safety Data Sheets on site

An SDS is written for the people who store, handle and clean up a product. It is not just a compliance file. In general terms, Australian WHS laws expect businesses using hazardous chemicals to have the current SDS readily accessible to workers and emergency services.

The sections to know

An SDS has 16 sections. The ones used most on site are first aid measures, accidental release measures (spill clean-up), handling and storage, and exposure controls and personal protection. Read these before the product arrives, not after a spill.

Keep them current and close

Keep an SDS for every product on site, in a folder or on a device near where the product is stored. Replace old versions when we send updates, and make sure new staff know where to find them.

Documents for supplier approval and tenders

Procurement teams, site safety officers and auditors often ask for the same set of documents before a new supplier is approved. We can send them together so your approval is not held up.

Quality

A copy of our VDA AdBlue® licence (No. 0005569), and a batch CoA or sample CoA. See certification and QC for how batches are tested.

Safety

The current SDS for each product you plan to buy, including AdBlue® and demineralised water.

Trading

Questions buyers ask

How do I check that a Certificate of Analysis applies to my AdBlue?

Match the batch number on the certificate to the number on the container or delivery paperwork. A certificate for a different batch does not describe your stock.

What urea concentration should an AdBlue certificate show?

ISO 22241 allows 31.8 to 33.2 percent urea, with 32.5 percent as the target. The result on the certificate should fall inside that range.

Where should I keep Safety Data Sheets?

Keep the current SDS for each product somewhere workers and emergency services can get to it quickly, close to where the product is stored. Replace old versions when updates are issued.

Can you send all the documents our procurement team needs at once?

Yes. Tell us which products you are buying and what your approval process needs, and we will send the SDS, certificate copies, CoA and trading documents together.

Need a specific document?

SDS, TDS, certificates — we'll send whatever you need.
