Yes, AdBlue® is another consumable to buy — but it's what lets a modern diesel run cleaner and more efficiently. Here's the emissions and efficiency story worth knowing before you write it off as a cost.
Emissions standards have tightened for years — Euro 4, 5, 6 — and Australia has followed. From 1 November 2024, new heavy-vehicle models sold here must meet ADR 80/04 (based on Euro VI), with all new heavy vehicles compliant from November 2025. It cuts permitted NOx by up to 80% and particulates by up to 66% versus the previous standard. The next step, Euro 7, begins in Europe for heavy vehicles from mid-2027, and Australia is expected to move in step over time.
The technology that makes these limits achievable is SCR — Selective Catalytic Reduction — and SCR runs on AdBlue®. In other words, AdBlue® isn't an optional extra; it's what keeps a compliant diesel legal and running.
EU heavy-duty NOx limits by standard (g/kWh). Euro VI (adopted in Australia as ADR 80/04) is about 80% below Euro V — and the tighter the limit, the more AdBlue® an engine doses to meet it.
Inside the SCR catalyst, AdBlue® converts harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) — a major cause of smog and respiratory harm — into ordinary nitrogen and water vapour. Cleaner air out the tailpipe, and, because SCR lets the engine run more efficiently, lower CO₂ per kilometre too. For fleets reporting on sustainability, that's a real, measurable contribution.

As standards tighten, engines dose more AdBlue® to hit lower NOx limits. A Euro VI truck typically uses AdBlue® at about 3–6% of its diesel volume — roughly 1.3–1.7 litres per 100 km for a long-haul prime mover. A truck covering 200,000 km a year can get through 5,000–6,500 litres of AdBlue®. Under Euro 7 that dosing rises again. Higher consumption isn't waste — it's the direct sign of an engine running cleaner.
For a typical Euro VI truck, AdBlue® is only about 3–6% of diesel volume — a small consumable doing a big job.
The fuel saving doesn't come from the fluid itself. It comes from the SCR design: because NOx is cleaned up after combustion, the engine can be tuned to burn fuel at its most efficient (with less exhaust-gas recirculation). AdBlue® is simply what makes that clean, efficient setup possible.
Industry data puts the fuel-economy benefit of SCR at roughly 3–10%, commonly 4–5% for heavy-duty diesels, compared with NOx-control methods that hurt economy. Over a year of long-haul running, that saving is significant — and it works in the same direction as your AdBlue® spend, not against it.

A long-haul truck burning ~30 L/100 km of diesel uses about 1.5 L/100 km of AdBlue® (≈5% by volume).
