Ballarat sits high on the Central Highlands and has some of the coldest winters of any Victorian regional city. Frosty mornings are normal from late autumn into spring, and operators often ask whether their AdBlue® will freeze.
AdBlue® freezes at about −11 °C. Ballarat frosts are rarely that cold, so stock in a shed will almost never freeze. If a drum or an exposed IBC does freeze, it thaws without harm and is fine to use. Vehicles with SCR systems are designed to heat the tank and lines on start-up.
More on cold weather in our AdBlue® in cold climates guide.
Ballarat sits on the Western Freeway, the main road freight route between Melbourne and Adelaide, and many depots here run linehaul as well as local and farm work.
A semi-trailer on a Melbourne to Adelaide return run of about 1,460 km, averaging around 45 L/100 km, uses roughly 660 L of diesel. At 3–6% of diesel, that is about 20–40 L of AdBlue® per round trip. A depot with six trucks doing two round trips a week can use 240–480 L a week.
Potato, grain and livestock operations around Ballarat often use AdBlue® in smaller, seasonal amounts. 20 L or 210 L drums with a hand pump suit a farm shed that uses less than an IBC in a few months.
At a few hundred litres a week, a 1,000 L IBC with a 12 V or 240 V pump and a meter is better value per litre than drums. Beyond a couple of IBCs a month, look at a bulk tank and scheduled refills.
Ballarat and the Central Highlands are supplied from our Melbourne site at Brooklyn, about 110 km east along the Western Freeway. Brooklyn is on the Ballarat side of Melbourne, which makes Ex Works pickup easy for trucks heading back from the city. Call for the pickup address.
Delivery to your farm, depot or yard is quoted to your suburb, and regular runs can be arranged. For bulk, ask for a private quote for your site.
Ballarat summers are milder than the plains, but a hot spell will still shorten shelf life if stock sits in the sun. Keep AdBlue® in a shaded, ventilated spot and use the oldest stock first.

Very rarely. AdBlue freezes at about minus 11 degrees Celsius, which is colder than Ballarat usually gets. If it does freeze it thaws without harm and can be used normally.
No. Never add antifreeze, water or any additive. It takes the AdBlue off spec and can damage the SCR system. Vehicles are designed to heat and thaw AdBlue themselves.
A semi-trailer averaging about 45 litres of diesel per 100 km over a 1,460 km round trip uses about 660 litres of diesel, so roughly 20 to 40 litres of AdBlue.
