Canberra has the widest temperature swing of any city we supply from Sydney. Frosty winter mornings and hot, dry summer afternoons both affect how you should store AdBlue®.
AdBlue® freezes at about −11 °C. Canberra regularly drops below zero overnight from June to August, but a sealed drum or IBC rarely gets cold enough to freeze solid. What you are more likely to see is a slow-running hand pump or a stiff hose on a cold morning. If product does freeze, it thaws without harm. Let it thaw naturally and don't heat it with a naked flame or heat gun.
Canberra summer days above 30 °C are common, and a black-topped yard or a steel shipping container gets far hotter than the air. Heat shortens shelf life. At or below 25 °C, AdBlue® keeps for about 18 months. At or below 30 °C, that falls to about 12 months, and at or below 35 °C to about 6 months. Keep drums and IBCs in a ventilated shed or under shade, fit an IBC cover if the tote sits outside, and use the oldest stock first.
Most Canberra AdBlue® buyers run fleets with Euro V or Euro VI diesels that come back to one depot each night. Construction and civil contractors building out the newer suburbs, waste collection, bus and coach operators, and government and utility fleets make up the bulk of it. Trucks heading out along the Monaro, Barton and Kings Highways also top up here.
A few utes and light trucks, or a workshop topping up customer vehicles. 10 L or 20 L drums on a shelf are easiest. Buy a pallet if you have the room, as the per-litre price is lower.
Four to ten trucks and some plant on one yard. A 1,000 L IBC with a 12 V or 240 V pump and auto nozzle usually cuts cost and spillage compared with 20 L drums.
Twenty or more heavy vehicles through one gate. A bulk tank with scheduled tanker deliveries and level monitoring takes AdBlue® off the job list. See bulk and on-site supply.
A civil contractor runs four tippers, each doing about 1,200 km a week at 40 L/100 km. That's about 1,920 L of diesel a week across the fleet. At a typical 3–6% dosing rate, the fleet uses roughly 58–115 L of AdBlue® a week. One 1,000 L IBC lasts about two to four months, which fits comfortably inside the shelf life if it's kept shaded. On 20 L drums, the same usage would mean handling three to six drums every week. Run your own numbers in the usage calculator.

Rarely. AdBlue freezes at about minus 11 degrees C, and Canberra's winter frosts seldom get that cold for long enough to freeze a full drum or IBC. If it does freeze, it thaws without harm. Let it thaw naturally.

It depends on your diesel use. As a guide, four tippers doing about 1,200 km a week each use roughly 58 to 115 L of AdBlue a week, so one IBC lasts two to four months. Call us with your numbers for a proper estimate.
