Darwin is hot all year, and a drum or IBC left in the sun can get far hotter than the air around it. In the Top End, storage temperature decides how long your AdBlue® stays in spec.
AdBlue® slowly breaks down in heat, giving off ammonia and losing urea concentration. ISO 22241-3 guidance on shelf life:
| Storage temperature | Expected shelf life |
|---|---|
| At or below 25 °C | About 18 months |
| At or below 30 °C | About 12 months |
| At or below 35 °C | About 6 months |
| Above 35 °C | Test before use |
Most unshaded storage in the Top End sits in the bottom two rows for much of the year. Plan on the shorter figures unless your store is air-conditioned or well shaded and ventilated.
Darwin is supplied from our nearest site, which is a long way by road. Remote stations and mine camps can also lose road access in the wet season. So there are two pressures: order far enough ahead that you never run dry, but not so far ahead that stock ages in the heat before you use it.
Typical AdBlue® dosing is about 3–6% of diesel use for trucks, and can be higher for some off-road engines. A site using 50,000 L of diesel a month needs roughly 1,500–3,000 L of AdBlue® a month. Our usage calculator does this per vehicle.
If your storage runs around 30–35 °C, aim to use each delivery within about six months. Before the wet season, order enough to get through it, and keep that stock in your coolest, shadiest spot.
Running out has real costs. Without AdBlue®, modern engines derate into limp mode. Off-spec AdBlue® can cause SCR faults and damage to injectors or catalysts. Both hurt more when the nearest replacement is days away. See protecting your fleet from shortages.
For mines, large stations and construction camps, a bunded on-site tank usually beats stacks of drums. Fewer containers means less handling and less exposure to dust and insects each time a pack is opened. One tank is also easier to shade and monitor than a yard of IBCs.
Site the tank on the shaded side of a building or under a roof. See bulk and on-site supply for how scheduled refills work.

Yes. Liquidia holds VDA AdBlue® licence No. 0005569 and every batch is tested to ISO 22241.

It depends on storage temperature. ISO 22241-3 guidance is about 12 months at or below 30 °C and about 6 months at or below 35 °C. If it has been stored above 35 °C, test it before use. In the Top End, plan on the shorter figures unless your store is well shaded and ventilated.
If your site can lose road access, yes. Order enough to get through the wet, store it in your coolest shaded spot, and use the oldest stock first. Call us with your usage and we'll help you size the order.
For mines, large stations and camps using several IBCs a month, often yes. A bunded on-site tank with a gauge or level monitoring cuts handling and contamination risk, and bulk deliveries from 1,000 L to 32,000 L can be scheduled.
