Winter crop harvest across the Central West, usually from around October into December, is when farm AdBlue® use peaks. Newer headers, tractors and every truck carting grain to receival sites burn a lot of diesel, and they all need AdBlue®.
Running out of AdBlue® at harvest can cost you. Once the tank is empty, a modern SCR engine will derate, and a header crawling in limp mode on a hot, dry afternoon with rain forecast costs far more than the AdBlue® itself.
Two headers each use around 400 L of diesel on a long harvest day. At 3–6%, that's about 12–24 L of AdBlue® per header per day, and some ag engines dose higher. Three trucks carting to the silos each use about 165 L of diesel a day, adding roughly 15–30 L of AdBlue® a day between them. Over a six-week harvest, that comes to about 1,600–3,300 L of AdBlue®. That's two to three IBCs, or a bulk tank filled before the first paddock.
Dubbo summers regularly go above 35 °C, and a machinery shed with a tin roof can run hotter than that. This is the biggest storage risk for AdBlue® in the region. Heat breaks the urea down, releases ammonia and lowers the concentration.
| Storage temperature | Approx. shelf life |
|---|---|
| At or below 25 °C | About 18 months |
| At or below 30 °C | About 12 months |
| At or below 35 °C | About 6 months |
| Above 35 °C | Test before use |
Guidance based on ISO 22241-3.
Winter frosts around Dubbo rarely come close to the freezing point of AdBlue® (about −11 °C), so cold is rarely a concern here.
Dubbo is about 390 km from our Fairfield East site by road, over the Blue Mountains on the Great Western and Mitchell Highways. We supply farms, freight depots on the Newell Highway, livestock carriers and mine contractors across the region.
We deliver IBCs, pallets of drums and bulk loads from 1,000 L to 32,000 L on our own trucks and tanker trailers. Delivery is quoted to your property or depot. Fuller loads usually bring the delivered price per litre down, so it can pay for neighbours or a group of growers to combine orders.
If your trucks already deliver grain or livestock toward Sydney, collecting Ex Works from Fairfield East on the return trip can be the most cost-effective option. Call ahead so your AdBlue® is ready to load.
Farms and depots that use AdBlue® all year may be better off with an on-site tank and scheduled refills than a stack of IBCs.

Add up the diesel your headers, tractors and trucks will use over harvest and allow roughly 3 to 6 percent of that as AdBlue, or more for some ag engines. A two-header operation with three trucks might use about 1,600 to 3,300 L over six weeks. Call us with your machine list for an estimate.
It's risky in the Central West. Stored at or below 30 degrees C, AdBlue keeps about 12 months, but above 35 degrees C it should be tested before use. Use leftover stock over winter, or send a sample for our free basic check before it goes into a header.
