AdBlue® in the tropics: why Townsville storage is different

Townsville is hot all year, and in the build-up and wet season it stays hot overnight. That makes storage temperature the single biggest factor in how long your AdBlue® stays in spec.

Average storage temperatureApprox. shelf life
At or below 25 °C18 months
At or below 30 °C12 months
At or below 35 °C6 months
Above 35 °CTest before use

An IBC in a steel shipping container in a Townsville yard can easily spend much of the year in the bottom two rows of that table. Heat breaks down the urea, releasing ammonia and dropping the concentration. Off-spec AdBlue® can trigger SCR faults and derate, and on a remote run that means a truck parked on the side of the road.

Road trains, the Flinders Highway and remote sites

Townsville is the base for a lot of long-haul work: road trains to Mount Isa and the North West Minerals Province along the Flinders Highway, cattle work across the north, and port freight. These trucks carry their AdBlue® a long way from any resupply.

A worked example

A road train averaging about 70 L/100 km on a Townsville to Mount Isa round trip of about 1,800 km uses roughly 1,260 L of diesel. At 3–6% of diesel, that is about 38–76 L of AdBlue® for the trip. A small fleet doing two trips a week each can get through an IBC in a fortnight or less.

Carry a spare, and carry it right

A sealed 20 L drum in a shaded toolbox is sensible insurance on a remote run. Don't carry it in the cab in the sun for weeks, and don't use a leftover chemical or water container.

Mine sites and depots

Sites using several IBCs a month are usually better off with a bunded tank, an inline filter and a meter. See bulk and on-site for tanks, monitoring and scheduled refills.

Planning Townsville supply around the wet season

We supply Townsville and North Queensland from our Brisbane site at Rocklea, about 1,350 km south by road on the Bruce Highway. Delivery is quoted to your site, and regular runs can be arranged for depots with steady usage.

The distance means planning ahead matters more here than almost anywhere we supply. From December to April, flooding can cut the Bruce Highway, and cyclones can close roads and the port for days.

  1. Know your weekly usageWork it out from diesel use with the usage calculator.
  2. Hold enough buffer before the wetEnough to ride out a road closure, but not so much that it sits in the heat for longer than about six months.
  3. Store it properlyShaded, ventilated and sealed, so the buffer is still in spec when you need it.
  4. Set a reminderUse the reorder reminder so you order before stock is low, not after.

Questions buyers ask

Do you deliver AdBlue® to Townsville?

Yes. Delivery to Townsville and North Queensland is quoted to your suburb and quantity, supplied from our Brisbane site, quoted to your site.

Is it genuine AdBlue®?

Yes. Liquidia holds VDA AdBlue® licence No. 0005569 and every batch is tested to ISO 22241.

What is the smallest order?

Single drums are available (call for a price), and 210 L drums and IBCs are the same price for one or more.

How long does AdBlue last in Townsville heat?

It depends on storage temperature. About 12 months at or below 30 degrees Celsius and about 6 months at or below 35 degrees. Above 35 degrees it should be tested before use. Shaded, ventilated storage makes a big difference in the tropics.

Can I store an IBC of AdBlue in a shipping container?

Not without ventilation and shade. A closed steel container in the Townsville sun gets very hot inside, which shortens AdBlue shelf life and can take it off spec.

How much AdBlue should I hold before the wet season?

Enough to cover a road closure of several days to a couple of weeks at your normal usage, but not so much that it sits in the heat for more than about six months. Call us with your weekly usage and we'll help you work it out.

Should road trains carry spare AdBlue?

On remote runs, a sealed 20 litre drum stored in a shaded toolbox is sensible insurance. Use only proper AdBlue containers, never old chemical or water containers.
