Many AdBlue® tanks in the Illawarra sit near the coast, around Port Kembla, Unanderra and Shellharbour. The weather is mild, but salt air and industrial dust affect how dispensing equipment holds up.
AdBlue® attacks copper, brass, zinc, aluminium and mild steel. When metal corrodes into the product, it can put AdBlue® off spec and cause SCR faults. Near the coast, fittings are already fighting salt, and a low-grade brass tap or galvanised nipple on an IBC will fail fast. Use only polyethylene, polypropylene or stainless steel anywhere the product touches.
Read more in AdBlue® compatible materials, or see the pumps and fittings we carry on the accessories page.
Illawarra AdBlue® demand is driven by the steelworks and its contractors, bulk and container movements through Port Kembla, coal trucks on the escarpment roads, bus and coach depots, and construction across the new estates around Shellharbour and West Dapto. Trucks climbing Mount Ousley Road or Picton Road work hard under load, and diesel use goes up with it.
A depot runs 15 buses, each doing about 1,400 km a week at around 40 L/100 km. That's about 560 L of diesel per bus, or 8,400 L a week across the depot. At 3–6% dosing, the depot uses roughly 250–500 L of AdBlue® a week, or about 1,000–2,000 L a month.
| Setup | Suits |
|---|---|
| 20 L drums | A few vehicles, or a workshop topping up customer trucks |
| 1,000 L IBC + pump | Around 250–1,000 L a month from one yard |
| 5,000 L bunded tank | 1,000 L+ a month, like the depot above |
| 10,000 L tank | Large depots, taking bigger tanker loads less often |
Estimates only. Your dosing rate depends on engine, load and duty cycle. Try the usage calculator with your own figures.

No. AdBlue attacks copper, brass, zinc, aluminium and mild steel, and corrosion can contaminate the product. Use polyethylene, polypropylene or stainless steel fittings only. That matters even more in salt air.
As a rough guide, one IBC with a pump suits up to about 1,000 L a month. Above that, a 5,000 L bunded tank with scheduled tanker deliveries is usually better value and easier. Call us with your usage and we'll recommend a setup.
Check the seals are intact and the batch number is on the label. The liquid should be clear and colourless, with no particles or strong ammonia smell. You can request the Certificate of Analysis for that batch.
