IBCs vs a Bulk Tank: When to Move Up for AdBlue®

IBCs work well until they don't. Here is how to tell when your site is ready to move from 1,000 L IBCs to a bulk AdBlue tank.

Home › Guides › Buying & locations

Most growing fleets follow the same path with AdBlue®. They start with drums, move to 1,000 L IBCs, and at some point start wondering about a bulk tank. There is no single volume where the switch becomes right for everyone, but there are clear signs that IBCs are costing you more than they should.

What IBCs do well

An IBC (intermediate bulk container) holds 1,000 L and is a solid, flexible way to store AdBlue. IBCs have real advantages:

  • Low setup cost — no tank to buy or install.
  • Portable — they can be moved to where the work is, or split between sites.
  • Simple dispensing — a gravity feed kit on an elevated IBC needs no power, or add a 240 V pump kit for faster flow.
  • Sealed product — a new, tamper-sealed IBC dedicated to AdBlue arrives clean.

For sites using up to a few IBCs a month, they are often the most sensible choice.

Signs you have outgrown IBCs

The trouble starts as usage climbs. Watch for these signs:

  • Frequent changeovers — swapping IBCs every week or more often, with the pump and hose moved each time.
  • Forklift time — a full IBC weighs about 1,150 kg, so every delivery and changeover needs a forklift and a trained operator.
  • Floor space — full, part-used and empty IBCs taking up room that could be used for other things.
  • Contamination risk — each changeover opens the system and handles fittings, which is a chance for dirt to get in.
  • Running out — the last IBC empties before the next delivery, and vehicles are held up.
  • Empties piling up — returning or disposing of used IBCs becomes its own job.

If several of these sound familiar, it is worth pricing a bulk tank.

What a bulk tank changes

A bulk tank sits permanently on site and is filled by tanker. Liquidia delivers bulk AdBlue from 1,000 L up to 32,000 L, with pricing quoted on volume and location.

A bulk tank also makes it practical to fit proper dispensing: a 240 V pump, inline filter, flow meter and hose reel in one permanent setup. Remote monitoring and scheduled refills mean the supplier can top up before you get low.

Liquidia builds 5,000 L and 10,000 L single-skin tanks with a lockable cabinet, and also supplies bunded tanks. Tank prices are quoted to suit the site. For bunding and storage rules, check with your state EPA and site requirements.

Working out whether to switch

Something you can do today: count how many IBCs you used over the last three months, then list the time spent on each: ordering, receiving, forklift moves, changeovers and handling empties. Multiply by a realistic hourly cost. Many sites are surprised how much labour sits behind "bargain" IBCs.

Other questions to ask:

  1. Will usage stay steady or grow over the next few years?
  2. Is there a suitable spot for a tank, with tanker access and shade?
  3. Would a tank lease suit better than buying outright?
  4. How much safety stock do you want on hand? The late-2021 urea shortage showed the value of holding more than a few days' supply.

Storage life still matters with a bulk tank. Size it so product turns over within its shelf life at your site temperature: around 12 months at up to 30°C, and less in hotter conditions. An oversized tank that holds product for too long is not an improvement.

If your use is borderline, a middle step is a larger number of IBCs on a regular delivery schedule. But once changeovers become a daily job, a tank usually pays its way. Our usage calculator can help you estimate volumes.

How Liquidia can help: We supply 1,000 L IBCs for smaller sites and bulk tanks, installation, monitoring and lease options for larger users. See our bulk and on-site page and ask for a quote based on your usage.

Common questions

How many IBCs a month before a bulk tank makes sense?

There is no fixed number. When changeovers, forklift time and running out start costing you regularly, it is worth pricing a tank.

Can I lease an AdBlue tank instead of buying?

Yes. Liquidia offers tank lease along with scheduled refills. Ask us for a quote.

What size bulk tank should I get?

Size it for your use and delivery frequency, but make sure product turns over within its shelf life at your site temperature.
